Public Safety serves a campus that covers 729 acres on central campus, various off-site locations and over 45,000 students, faculty, staff and visitors on any given day. The department consists of 196 permanent employees including 50 sworn law enforcement officers, and 98 temporary employees, of those, 20 are sworn reserve officers, 44 are contract security guards and 34 others who are assigned throughout Public Safety to various divisions.
We are responsible for maintaining a safe and pleasant environment in which to live and learn. Officers are responsible for many facets of protecting life and property but their greatest goal is to provide quality customer-focused, problem-solving services in partnership with the diverse community they serve. Both the laws of the State of North Carolina and the regulations of the University are enforced by officers. Currently, the department is in the process of upgrading equipment, vehicles, and technology used by officers in the field on a day-to-day basis. Some of these upgrades include new patrol car designs, the addition of LED lights, and the 800 MHz radio emergency communication system. Every officer also carries an 800 MHz radio, which they have been assigned. The department has also commissioned a mobile command center for use in emergency situations and special events. The department will meet the challenge of an ever evolving, growing community, which includes the development of the Carolina North Satellite Campus in the area of Carolina North Forest.
The UNC-CH Department of Public Safety and the University of Chapel Hill at Chapel Hill are “Equal Opportunity Employers through affirmative action”. Minorities and females are encouraged to apply for all positions.
