Q:  What do I need to do to get a job with UNC-CH Department of Public Safety?

Q:  Is there an age limit?

A:  The minimum age is 20 years old, however you have to be 21 when you graduate BLET.

Q:  Are there any restrictions on where I can live?

A:  No

Q:  How many officers do you hire per year?

A:  Varies year to year based on the number of openings the department may have at any  given time

Q:  Do you accept out of state or lateral transfers?

A:  Yes

Q:  What is Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET)?

A:  BLET is the state mandated training required by NC Training and Standards Commission to become a sworn police officer in the State of NC.

Q:  I am an experienced police officer.  How much can I expect my starting salary to be?

A:  $27,915 - $54,147

Q:  How long is field training?

A:  12 Weeks

Q:  How long does it take to hire an applicant?

A:  3 to 5 months 

Q:  I do not have a BLET certification, will the department pay for me to attend BLET if hired?

A:  Each candidate is considered on a case by case basis. 

Q:  Does the department offer its own police academy?

A:  No

Q:  Does the police department maintain an eligibility list of police applicants for future vacancies?

A:  No

Q:  Is there a probationary period for new police officers?

A:  Yes, 9-12 months 

Q:  Is greater consideration given to applicants who have completed BLET?

A:  Yes, BLET certified is preferred. 

Q:  Can I enroll in BLET on my own?

A:  Yes, through the community college system

Q:  Is greater consideration given to someone with a college degree or a military background?

A:  Department reviews all candidates based on total qualifications

Q:  Can you do all of the testing in one or two days for out of state applicants?

A:  No, can not be done.
