Internal Affairs   

The Internal Affairs Section acts as a guardian of the UNC-CH Department of Public Safety's reputation.  It is the investigator of complaints of misconduct and allegations of wrong doing by any member of the department.

GOAL

The Internal Affairs Section mission is to provide an effective Personnel Early Warning System by analyzing allegations and trends, and conducting comprehensive investigations designed to ensure the highest standards of integrity.

 

The UNC-CH Department of Public Safety Internal Affairs Section is the guardian of the Department's reputation.  The UNC-CH Department of Public Safety is interested in the welfare of all persons and in taking action where its employees have proven derelict in their duties.  If it becomes necessary for you to make a complaint, you can be assured that your complaint will be given a fair and through investigation.  Should you have occasion to lodge a complaint about the actions of a member of the UNC-CH Department of Public Safety, we are providing the following information about how complaints are made and investigated.

What is Internal Affairs?

The mission of Internal Affairs is to investigate complaints received on sworn and non-sworn employees of the UNC-CH Department of Public Safety.  All complaints of misconduct and any allegations of misconduct, whether received from University faculty, staff, students or department employees, are thoroughly investigated by Internal Affairs to ensure the integrity of the UNC-CH Department of Public Safety.

Protection of the Public

The University Community of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have the right to receive fair, efficient and impartial public safety services.  Any misconduct by department employees must first be detected, then thoroughly investigated, and finally, properly adjudicated to assure the highest standards of conduct.

Protection of the Department

The UNC-CH Department of Public Safety is often judged by the conduct of its individual employees.  It is imperative that the whole organization not be criticized because of the misconduct of a few.  An informed University Community must have confidence that its Public Safety Department honestly and fairly investigates and adjudicates all allegations of misconduct against its employees.

Protection of the Employee

Employees must be protected against false and misinformed allegations of misconduct. This can only be accomplished through a consistently thorough investigative process.
