May 9-11, 2014

Commencement exercises and receptions will take place for the 2014 school year on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 9th through 11th.

For the main ceremony on May 11th, several lots and roads will be closed.  This is designed to make help operations run as smoothly as possible.  Motorists are asked to plan accordingly as traffic will be very heavy at times.  This is especially true from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. for the main ceremony at Kenan Stadium.

Campus Shuttles & Parking for Sunday, May 11th:

The Department of Public Safety recommends the use of the Park and Ride Shuttles off-campus. Using the Park and Ride lots off-campus reduces the congestion on campus and makes it easier for patrons to find parking. The Park and Ride locations are: (1) University Mall next to Dillard's and (2) the Friday Center Park and Ride Lot.

However, the following lots and directions are recommended for guests/graduates planning on coming to campus to seek parking.

Please note that state disability placards/plates/permits are not given special recognition for the 9:30 a.m. ceremony. Vehicles with state disability placards/plates/permits will be directed to lots serviced by shuttles unless they also display a special commencement disability parking permit for the assigned reserved lot. Guests and/or graduates needing special disability parking for the 9:30 a.m. ceremony must arrange special disability parking in advance thru UNC Disability Services at (919) 962-8300.

Suggested Campus Parking Lots Serviced by Shuttles: All parking is free unless otherwise noted.

Cardinal Deck: The Cardinal Deck is best accessed off of 15/501 and Columbia Street to Manning Drive and then by turning right onto West Drive. Taking these directions avoids a tremendous amount of traffic on campus. Carolina Livery (CL) will shuttle patrons parking in this lot to the stadium beginning 7:15 a.m. and back to the lot following the main ceremony until approximately 12:30 p.m. The bus stop will be located on Manning Drive in front of the deck and UNC Hospitals. Guests/graduates walking from Kenan Stadium to other receptions/ceremonies following the main ceremony can catch a shuttle from the Old Well, the Dean E. Smith Center and the Student Union back to the Cardinal Deck from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Dogwood Deck: The Dogwood Deck is best accessed off of 15/501 and Columbia Street to Mason Farm Road and then East Drive. Taking these directions avoids a tremendous amount of traffic on campus. Carolina Livery (CL) will shuttle patrons parking in this lot to the stadium beginning 7:15 a.m. and back to the lot following the main ceremony until approximately 12:30 p.m.. The bus stop will be located on Manning Drive in front of the deck and UNC Hospitals. Guests/graduates walking from Kenan Stadium to other receptions/ceremonies following the main ceremony can catch a shuttle from the Old Well, the Dean E. Smith Center and the Student Union back to the Dogwood Deck from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Parking in the Dogwood Deck is free until 3 p.m. At 3 p.m. the deck will resume normal visitor parking operations.

Manning Lot: The Manning Lot is best accessed off of 15/501 and Manning Drive then Skipper Bowles Drive (Bowles Drive). Taking these directions avoids a tremendous amount of traffic on campus. Carolina Livery (CL) will shuttle patrons parking in this lot to the stadium beginning 7:15 a.m. and back to the lot following the main ceremony until approximately 12:30 p.m.. Guests/graduates walking from Kenan Stadium to other receptions/ceremonies following the main ceremony can catch a shuttle from the Old Well, the Dean E. Smith Center and the Student Union back to the Manning Lot from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Bowles Lot: The Bowles Lot is best accessed off of 15/501 and Manning Drive then Skipper Bowles Drive (Bowles Drive). Taking these directions avoids a tremendous amount of traffic on campus. Carolina Livery (CL) will shuttle patrons parking in this lot to the stadium beginning 7:15 a.m. and back to the lot following the main ceremony until approximately 12:30 p.m.. Guests/graduates walking from Kenan Stadium to other receptions/ceremonies following the main ceremony can catch a shuttle from the Old Well, the Dean E. Smith Center and the Student Union back to the Bowles Lot from                1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

 


Roadway & Parking Restrictions for Sunday, May 11th

To accommodate the variety of parking needs for the Sunday morning commencement ceremony and the afternoon events, several roads and parking lots will be closed or restricted.

Miscellaneous Information:

Please note that although parking is free unless otherwise noted (refer to all information provided), weekday parking permits are NOT valid. Parking in fire lanes, reserved spaces, on sidewalks and landscapes is prohibited and can result in ticketing and/or towing at the owner's expense.

Traffic is expected to be heavy between 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. and then again between 11 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Advance planning and patience will help the situation tremendously. The Raleigh Road AND Cameron Avenue corridor is likely to be the heaviest, so alternate routes are suggested. Therefore, Park and Ride Lots and South Campus parking lots are the recommended parking locations.

You can help us improve the traffic flow by arriving early, using suggested parking locations, using park and ride shuttle from off campus and by refraining from stopping in roadways to discharge or pick-up passengers.

Employees reporting to work may park in the Dogwood Deck Saturday and Sunday and exit without paying by showing their identification card or permit as long as they exit by                 8 a.m. Monday morning.

Roadways:

Ridge Road will be closed to Thru Traffic and restricted to commencement credentials and buses only from 7 a.m. - approximately 1:00 p.m. Weekday parking permits will NOT be honored.

Stadium Drive will be restricted to Stadium Drive commencement credentials and buses only from 6 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m. Weekday parking permits will NOT be honored.

South Road from Raleigh Road to Columbia Street will be closed to Thru Traffic and restricted to commencement credentials / permits and buses only from 7 a.m. - approximately 1:00 p.m. Weekday parking permits will NOT be honored (except for BTD and ND permits).

Raleigh Street from Cameron Avenue to South Road will be closed to Thru Traffic and restricted to commencement credentials / permits and buses only from 7 a.m. - approximately 1:00 p.m. Weekday parking permits will NOT be honored (except for BTD and ND permits).

 

Cameron Avenue may be restricted to public disability and commencement permit access from approximately 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Weekday parking permits will NOT be honored.

Restricted or Reserved Parking Lots:

Stadium Drive will be restricted to valid Stadium Drive Commencement permits only. S4 permits will not be valid. All vehicles should be removed from Stadium Drive by 5 a.m. Sunday morning. Vehicles remaining on Stadium Drive after 5 a.m. will be towed.

Undergraduate Library Lot will be restricted to valid Undergraduate Library Commencement permits only. N8 permits will not be valid. All vehicles should be removed from the lot by 5 a.m. Sunday morning. Vehicles remaining in the Undergraduate Library Lot after 5 a.m. will be towed.

Rams Head Deck will be restricted to valid Rams Head Deck Commencement permits only. RD permits will not be valid. All vehicles should be removed from the lot by 5 a.m. Sunday morning. Vehicles remaining in the Rams Head Deck after 5 a.m. will be towed.

Public Safety Lot will be restricted beginning 5 a.m. Sunday morning. Vehicles should be removed from the lot by 5 a.m. or risk being towed at the owner's expense.

The Emergency Drive (Gate 6/Crescent) Parking Area will be reserved beginning 5 a.m. Vehicles must be removed from the lot by 5 a.m. on Sunday, May 12th and remain clear of the area until 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Koury / Dean E. Smith Lot will be restricted from Friday, May 10th at 5 p.m. to Sunday, May 12th at approximately 9 p.m.

The South Road metered spaces will be reserved and should be clear of vehicles beginning 2 p.m. on Friday, May 10th through 8 p.m. Sunday, May 12th. The meters will be used for bus staging and disability parking for Carmichael Arena ceremonies on Saturday and Sunday. They should remain vacant on Sunday from 5 a.m. to approximately 11 a.m. when the Sunday ceremonies begin. A valid disability permit will be required during allowed parking times.

Carmichael Drive will be reserved and should be clear of vehicles beginning 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 11th through 8 p.m. Sunday, May 12th. The drive spaces will be used for equipment set-up/drop-off and special guest parking (with valid permits) for Carmichael Auditorium ceremonies on Saturday and Sunday. They should remain vacant on Sunday from 5 a.m. to approximately noon when the Sunday ceremonies begin. A valid disability permit will be required.

School of Government Deck will be reserved and should be clear of vehicles beginning 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 11th through 8 p.m. Sunday, May 12th, with the exception of weekday KSD permits. The spaces will be used for disability parking and special guest parking (with valid permits) on Saturday and Sunday. A valid disability permit or commencement KSD permit will be required unless the guest/graduate is on the parking list.

Kenan Field House Lot (Loudermilk Lot) will be closed and all vehicles must be removed by 5 a.m. on Sunday, May 12th to facilitate disability shuttle drop-off and pick-up. Vehicles remaining in the lot at 5 a.m. will be towed at the owner's expense.

The Swain Lot is reserved on Sunday for disability parking and special guests/faculty for the afternoon ceremonies. Guests/staff will need to be on the monitor list or have valid Swain lot commencement permits (arranged through Public Safety) in order to access Cameron Avenue and the Swain parking lot.

The lots along Ridge Road will not be available from approximately 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, except by special commencement permit. Ridge Road will be closed to thru traffic. (Law School, Law Programs, Navy Field, Boshamer, Avery, Ridge Road spaces and Rams Head Deck).

Disability Parking for Sunday, May 11th

Kenan Stadium Ceremony at 9:30 a.m.- State disability placards/plates/permits are not given special recognition for the 9:30 a.m. ceremony. Vehicles with state disability placards/plates/permits will be directed to lots serviced by shuttles unless they also display a special commencement disability parking permit for the designated and reserved disability lots. Guests and/or graduates needing special disability parking for the 9:30 a.m. ceremony must arrange special disability parking in advance thru UNC Disability Services at (919) 962-8300.

Smith Center Ceremonies after 10:00 a.m.- The Williamson Lot across the street from the Dean E. Smith Center and Koury Natatorium will be reserved for disability parking. State disability placards/plates/permits will be honored along with any commencement disability permit.

Carmichael Arena Ceremonies after 11:00 a.m.- The School of Government Deck will be used for disability parking for Sunday, May 12th, 2013 afternoon ceremonies. The South Road metered spaces next to Hooker Fields and the School of Government Deck will also be available for ceremonies taking place at Carmichael Arena after 11 a.m. State disability placards/plates/permits will be honored along with any commencement disability permit.

Cameron Avenue Parking Lots after 11:00 a.m.- Although Cameron Avenue will be closed to through traffic from approximately 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., state disability placards/plates/permits will be allowed access to look for parking in the Cameron Avenue parking lots on a first-come-first serve basis.
